Let's give it a try!

Ok, I'll be honest...this isn't my first blog. This is actually my 3rd blog. My first blog was about my kids, mostly pictures to keep family up to date, but then I just started emailing pictures instead. My second blog was political, I'm very politically minded, but even I was getting bored. I'm infamous for starting things and not finishing them (ask my husband), but I'm working on that. In fact, I have started several things AND finished them since we've moved into our new house, which brings me to my latest attempt at blogging. I am really enjoying decorating our new house with things that I have made myself. So, I decided to start this blog to sort of track my progress. I consider myself somewhat crafty and definitely a cheapskate, so there you go. I refuse to spend a fortune decorating my home, but I want it to look nice. With inspiration from mostly the Internet (how to's, other bloggers, etc.) I have decided that I can make just about anything cheaper than I could buy it. I have also recently discovered beading, hope to try my hand at sewing soon (I asked for a sewing machine for my birthday), and I enjoy cooking and baking. So, I hope that this blog can be a home for all of my diy projects.

I'll start with some of the projects that I have already done around the house. This first one was simple. I took a pencil and a stencil (see how I rhymed!) and stenciled the words "Live, Laugh, Love" above our living room windows. Then I filled them in with brown paint. It took me probably 3 hours total to do the whole thing. I know that I could have done it much faster if I had used real stencils, rather than ones that I printed off of the web, but live and learn. (This is where being such a cheapskate sometimes bites me in the you-know-where).

On my next project, I drew inspiration from ThriftyDecorChick. Her blog is fabulous and I want to be like her when I grow up!! Ok, here's what I did: I found some approx. 12x12 pieces of wood in the garage. I spray painted the edges brown. Then, I heavily coated the top with modge podge, placed a piece of scrapbook paper on top and then another coat of modge podge on the paper. The one on the top left has some little faux flowers hot glued on the corners. Super duper easy, fun and cheap!

I did the same thing with these. (Wow, that picture didn't come out well). You can see the seem on the far left one a little, but that one is in the corner of the room, so it's not that noticable.

I've done a few more things around the house, but I'll save them for the next post. Don't want to get ahead of ourselves! :-)

  1. You have a great imagination! I would suggest hanging your art pieces 3" apart so they look like a collection. I just finished moving all the art in my house down to eye level and 3" apart and I'm much happier with them. Makes the house look cozy! Kudos!
